Hands of Hope Asia (HOHA)

Background

Many young girls are exploited today for a combination of reasons; poverty, drugs, oppression, slavery and evil. Most families have some form of defense but poor communities are vulnerable because of lack. In the past, girls are often the ones exploited but today, young boys, babies are equally threatened. Cyber connectivity has moved the entire dark business to another frontier; children told to take off their clothes in front of screens and to perform vile acts with their siblings. Babies are tied and gagged for sadistic thrills.

HOHA was setup as an independent social enterprise,

primarily because typical NGOs in humanitarian work cannot report profits in their books. We discovered that the generous act of giving, without training the child to succeed independently is insufficient. More often, it breeds a culture of expecting hand-outs which has led to idleness and shortcuts; a better life begging than working with their hands. But as most of our older girls have learnt, they will not need to submit themselves to perverse biddings when they have skills, which makes them employable.

Exploited children are indeed at danger of going back to a life of abuse.

Perpetrators are on a look out for abused girls that have been climatized to accept a lesser life. The survivors that buck this trend are those with meaningful jobs.

Hence, HOHA’s primary objective is to empower these kids with jobs.

We give them skill sets training and creative employment. We will send them to school if they are able to continue on the academic track. We have taken a longer journey to teach our children the wisdom of saving and spending towards the right things in life. We teach the trappings of spending beyond ability and pitfalls of debts. We teach survival skills of prudence; a quieter life which will allow them to rebuild.

Our Approach

Education is our approach, we want every child to learn a skill. We give them an hourly wage, with incentives to improve. We are careful to pay them fair market wage rates so they will never take a humiliating or suboptimal job that tantamount to abuse again. Our objective therefore to give the child the ability and confidence of defending his/her own need.

Our Products

Each of our products carries a wage element, which goes to the child personally. The rest of profits go directly to nurturing – food, medical, education.

Note: Part of HOHA funding goes to educating the parents of the street kids. Informing them about the threats of trafficking, cyber cafes. Also parenting skills. There has been such a widespread of child abuse because parents themselves are poor and have resorted to whatever means can bring a meal. Hence, we do employ mums which are poor and lack the ability to support their children.
